The future of the Dutch energy system is still undecided. Multiple scenarios outline how it could develop, each with different implications, trade-offs, and uncertainties. Rather than waiting for a final direction, these possibilities are shared early to help people get familiar with what might lie ahead. But when futures are described through reports and data, they remain difficult to grasp.
Making futures familiar
Based on research by Michiel de Haan, several scenarios were developed for the future energy system. Our role was not to define these futures, but to translate them into something that can be seen, understood, and compared. By structuring information and visualising key elements, the scenarios become easier to navigate and easier to imagine
Seeing what doesn’t exist yet
A set of visualisations that communicate different possible pathways for the Dutch energy system. The visuals clarify how each scenario works, what it prioritises, and where uncertainties lie. By making these futures tangible, the project helps people engage with possibilities before they become reality.
